Steep v Not The MCC: STEEP Cricket Club’s youngsters impressed against touring side Not The MCC.

Steep started an under-13 side a few years ago and now have a full complement of youth teams thanks largely to the coaching efforts of first team captain John Smith and Sunday captain Jhon Cosgrove, who were both spectators on Sunday.

Steep bowled first, and youngsters Hector Pocock, Jonty Page, Carter Smith and Jack Paul all took valuable wickets. Senior player Mel Palmer tore into the tail taking two wickets, but Not The MCC hung on and scored 207-7 off 40 overs.

Paul opened the batting for Steep and rocketed past his half-century with ease. However, two quick wickets fell and captain for the day Will Yates came to the crease.

Both Paul and Yates have come through the Steep youth system and have broken into the senior ranks despite being 17 years old.

They showed a maturity to belie their years and Paul majestically strode past his century with some spectacular boundaries.

Yates lent fine support and looked all set for his half-century before playing on to his own wicket for 48. Steep were closing in on victory but still needed 16 for the win.

Jonty Page was next in to bat and the confident 12-year-old played a couple of clever shots to keep the score ticking along.

Paul hit two fine fours to bring victory within sight, and five runs were needed from the last over.

Page hit a single to give his partner the strike and Paul sealed the win and took his own tally to 130 not out.
